Background

The Capitol Theatre first opened its doors in downtown Macon in the late 1910s, introducing audiences to the drama and glamour of the silver screen, and was among the first venues in the area to offer air conditioning. After thriving for decades, it closed in the mid-1970s and sat neglected for nearly thirty years. A restoration effort that began in 2003 culminated in the theatre reopening in 2006, and it has since become a cornerstone of downtown Macon’s revitalization. The Moonhanger Group, owners of downtown favorites such as The Rookery and Dovetail, entered a long-term management agreement with the theatre in 2013.
