Macon Head Space is a Macon, Georgia nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting mental wellness and reducing the stigma around mental health in the community. Founded in 2021 and organized as a 501(c)(3) public charity, the organization grew out of a simple but powerful idea: to bring mental wellness activities directly into local parks and neighborhoods so that more people could access them. Under the leadership of Executive Director Nancy Cleveland, Macon Head Space has expanded from a single event into a recurring community initiative serving individuals, children, and families across Macon-Bibb County.
The organization is best known for its mental health “pop-up gyms,” free community events held in parks and other neighborhood spaces. These gatherings offer a welcoming, judgment-free environment where attendees of all ages can take part in activities such as guided yoga, meditation, art therapy, and fitness sessions, along with quiet spaces like a Zen Tea Garden for those who simply need a place to unwind and collect their thoughts. Events have also featured offerings such as therapy consultations, vision boards, drum circles, food giveaways, and even pet exams, all led by local community members and students.
A central part of Macon Head Space’s mission is making mental wellness accessible and approachable for everyone. Rather than prescribing treatment, the organization focuses on giving people resources and tools to support their own well-being, recognizing that there is no one-size-fits-all solution to mental health. It works collaboratively with park and public-land agencies, healthcare providers, and community partners, and has used a data-informed approach to identify which neighborhoods could benefit most from its events, with the goal of leveling the playing field and showing that every individual in Macon-Bibb matters.
Macon Head Space is located at 391 Monroe Street, Macon, GA 31201, and hosts ongoing community wellness events, including regular gatherings at the Booker T. Washington Complex. The organization welcomes volunteers and community participation. Anyone in the Macon area interested in attending an event, volunteering, or learning more about its programs is encouraged to reach out to Macon Head Space.
