Riverside Cemetery & Conservancy is a historic garden cemetery in Macon, Georgia, established in 1887. Set on 125 landscaped acres above the Ocmulgee River, it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and operates as a private, not-for-profit organization.
A Historic and Active Cemetery
Though historic, Riverside is a modern and active cemetery with options for families and individuals, including:
- Mausoleum, columbarium, and cremation garden spaces
- Traditional lots and estate lots
- Ongoing development of new sections
- An online database for searching interment records, obituaries, and grave locations
More than 18,000 people are interred at Riverside, including Civil War veterans from both the Union and the Confederacy.
Heritage and Community
Designed in part by landscape architect Calvert Vaux, Riverside is considered an archetype of the late-19th-century rural cemetery, with rolling hills, mature trees, and notable monuments. The Conservancy preserves the grounds as a green space and cultural landmark, offering guided walking tours during October and Macon’s Cherry Blossom Festival, an annual spring photography event, and year-round group tours, along with self-guided maps of numbered sites.
