Mrs. Griffin’s Barbecue Sauce

Mrs. Griffin’s is a historic barbecue sauce maker based in Macon, Georgia. Produced in Macon since 1935, it is the oldest barbecue sauce in Georgia and one of the oldest in the United States.

The Sauce

Mrs. Griffin’s produces a regional-style barbecue sauce blended from mustard, tomato, vinegar, and spices. The sauce reflects the traditional Central Georgia style, which combines the mustard base common to the east with the tomato base common to the west. Key features include:

  • A low-sugar, mustard-and-tomato blend
  • A thinner, traditional mop-style consistency
  • Small-batch production at the company’s Macon facility
  • A range of bottle sizes and product packs

The sauce is sold in grocery stores across the Southeast, including Kroger, Ingles, Food Lion, Walmart, and Sam’s Club, as well as online and in local restaurants.

Background

The recipe was developed by M.E. Griffin in the kitchen of his Macon home, and he named the sauce after his wife, Etta. The company adopted a founding date of 1935 and has been made in Macon for more than 80 years. Today the business is led by owner Roland Neel, the third owner, and operates an 8,000 square foot facility in Macon, producing the sauce using the same traditional methods. Mrs. Griffin’s carries the tagline “Puttin’ South in Your Mouth Since 1935.”
